Today is New Year’s Eve and Tios Yola and Artuto arrive to San Francisco from the city. Jaime and Araceli have been here all week long, and we’ve had a lot of fun with them, but now they’re planning on leaving some time today. So Araceli is giving all the girls haircuts.
Josue and I go to Villa to check out the “feria” (fair) that they had been setting up all week long. It was a trip to see how they set up the rides. To get them level at the bases, they shove shims in there or rest the base on bricks or stumps of wood. It hardly looks safe. They have a lot of food stands, stands that sell toys, because Christmas as far as presents for the kids here, is celebrated on the “Dia de los Reyes” (King’s Day) which is on January 6th. After eating some snacks we head home.
When we get home, we play some more card games, and in the evening we take Jaime, Araceli & the boys to the bus station, and wished them a safe trip home.
Back at home, they were getting ready for dinner. We had a big family dinner. We had to bring in an extra table and all the chairs, because everybody was their, Tia Vero, Gerardo, Tia Prima, Tios Yola y Arturo, Tia Elia, Emmanuel, Aide´ & the girls, Octavio y Aurora & the girls, and us.
It was a very nice dinner. After that, everyone went to mass, since we weren’t going they assigned us the task of going to get tequila for tonight. On our way to complete our mission, we were talking and we realized that this is the first New Year’s, for that matter Christmas too, in quite a few years that we’ve actually been able to celebrate them together! Over there the past few years have been so hectic and busy, and with Josue working nights through winter, we hardly saw each other during these winter holidays. We would just squeeze in the holiday dinners when we could, but never spent midnight together! So, it’s a nice change. It was a pleasant detail to take note of, and made us both thankful for this opportunity and chance to spend quality time together.
We are so grateful.
We made it back home before everybody else, so it gave us a chance to take showers and get comfy for the night.
When everybody got home, right before midnight, we all gathered around the table and led by Tio Arturo, each and everyone of us, said our thanks to God, and hopes and wishes for the New Year. It was very nice.
Right after that, they all started sitting down again for a second round of dinner. We were still full, so we slipped away to call home and talk to both sides of our family, to wish them a Happy New Year.
Once they were done with dinner (again), the kids all wanted to play Blitz again - so this time we taught Tia Vero, Tio Arturo and Aide´all how to play as well, so with them, us and the regulars (all the kids) Emmanuel, Gerardo, Alejandra y Gloria - there was nine of us total, it made for a pretty good size game.
But just after the toast, my allergies hit me like a brick, and I couldn’t stop sneezing, so I took a couple Benedryl to help calm them down. So not even half way through the game, I was falling asleep, it was already 2:30am. Josue was on his last coin, so I thought I’d atleast stick it out that long. But then he lost, so I told him I was tired, and he said he’d finish my hand, I still had three coins left.
Buenas noches everybody - and Happy New Year.
