Saturday. 1.15.11 Tio’s “soccer game”

Today cousins Paula and Gustavo came over for the weekend with the girls. So it was a nice reminder that we needed to clean out our car and organize our stuff better, we still need to repack our clean clothes since we did laundry yesterday.
In the afternoon we went for a walk to the campo down the street, where Tio Arturo was supposed to be playing today, but I guess didn’t play after all. So when we got there, they were just about ready to leave. So we walked home, and on the way home, bought some tortillas as we were told to do! Which by the way are super cheap down here. Less than ten pesos (a dollar) for a kilo of freshly made corn tortillas (which give or take is 3 dozen).
When we get home, Paula had made carne for tacos al pastor, we all sit down to a very nice dinner. Then just like back at home, we start playing games. First we play “plato” - a gambling game, that is pretty simple, but extremely easy to lose your money on, then after a while, we show them how to play Blitz. After losing my money in both games - I decide it’s time for me to bow out, plus I want to make a cake! I finally found a yellow cake mix, I thought I’d give it a try to make “Velia’s Mandarin-Pineapple” cake down here. I found all the ingredients except for the can of mandarin oranges, I’m used to using. So instead I substitute it for fresh ones. That wasn’t the only difference in ingredients: I found a can of pineapple chunks not crushed pineapple, the whip cream is of course not Cool Whip, but hoping it will be close in taste, also I can’t find any instant pudding mix, but I did find a vanilla “gelatina de leche” mix, so I’m going to try using that instead!
So, I try to make the cake, being carefree and not stressing too much, for there are no cups for measuring, but I try to estimate it. I follow the directions on the box, to figure out the temperature settings for the oven in °Celsius, so I feel pretty comfortable that I’m getting this right.
Little details that I forgot to check with the cook of the house - are the temperature settings accurate on your oven? Or does it tend to over or under heat? Ooops! So - it’s supposed to have cooked for a half an hour, but only 15 minutes in, and mind you - I’m right there in the kitchen, just finishing up making the frosting - and from the other room, where they’re still playing the second game of Blitz, the call out that something’s burning! So we check it, and Tia wants to take it out, but I’m hesitant because it hasn’t been long enough and maybe the middle is still raw. But the outsides are definitely burnt - so she takes it out. It’s cooked all the way through, the top is just slightly charred, the edges are definitely burnt, who knows about the bottom? I guess we’ll find out tomorrow! I let it cool down, picked off the burnt parts from on top & frosted it anyway - might as well right?! We’ll get what we can out of it! So I put it in the fridge & I guess we’ll try it tomorrow morning!
Wind down with a movie and off too bed. Tomorrow we’re going to Xochimilco with the family! I can’t wait - it should be fun!

He looked so cute!
