Tonight we went to our second posada of the season, cousins Daniel y Mavis invited us to go with them to the next little town over, (Ejido) where it would go through Daniel’s mom’s neighborhood. Around 6:30pm they came to pick us up - we jumped in the back of the truck (which is not illegal here and you see it all the time) and had a very chilly ride to Ejido, good thing it wasn’t very far - the nights now are pretty cold.
This time we were hanging out with Mavis’ family more, so we sort of cheated and didn’t walk the entire length of the posada, the group of people walked on passed her suegra’s house so we just waited there for them to come back. Then moved on from there with the group. When we got to the house that welcomed us in, it was a beautiful gem of a house, that from the street was quite deceiving. From the street the house dropped down, so that the garage was the top level of the house. And from the walkway entrance from the street, you walk down a little trail into a deck for the second level of the house, or continue walking around and down to the bottom level of the house and the grass yard. On one end of the yard, the had ropes set up, with a piñata hanging ready to go. Once the rosary was complete, our hosts began passing out the cups and ponche, and tonight they served freshly made tamales. There were sweet tamales with chunks of pineapple as well as the regular kind of tamales with meat.
After everybody was done with the food and drink, they called all the kids over to the piñata area to have a turn at hitting it. Once one kid was picked to hit it - the rest began to sing the song… “dale dale dale, no pierdas el tino…” the same song I mentioned before to give everybody roughly the same time to hit the piñata. This ritual tonight seemed to be very organized. The ropes were set up so that it was on a pulley, so it made moving the piñata up and down very easy. However organized it was, there were a lot of kids and the dog piles were crazy, I’m cracking up because it’s just so funny to watch. Josue is playing camera man and getting all up the action. Once one piñata was cracked they lowered the rope and put up a new one, this must have happened two or three times, when we realized they had a bunch of piñatas ready to go, Josue led us up to the second floor balcony so we could get a sky view of the action so we’d be out of the chaos but at a good vantage point for taking pictures. They must have went through a dozen piñatas tonight, and Josue figured they were doing so many because they weren’t going to pass out bags tonight. But after all the action of the piñatas was done as people were filing out to exit, they still were passing out bags to all the guests as they were leaving the property. What a night! It was a lot of fun. The best part was probably seeing all the action of the piñatas - we saw kids jumping on top of a 20 kid pile up, we saw kids squeezing their way in through the bottom, kids squeezing their way out and some kids getting yanked out from the very bottom by their moms! Sooo funny!
